Whether they are living at home, staying in the dorms, or living off-campus, your car insurance will cover them the same as it does today.
However, if your son or daughter are planning to attend a school more than 100-miles away, then there are a few things to consider:
- If they are taking a car with them, you should let your agent know of this as they will update the garaging location on your policy. This could result in a slightly higher or lower premium, depending on where there are attending school
- If they are not taking a car with them, you should let you agent know as well. By leaving the car at home, you may qualify for a “Student away” discount – saving you a few dollars.
- Regardless of whether they are taking the car with them or leaving it at home, let them know that they can help out by achieving a 3.0 GPA or better. Good student discounts are available from most companies. For the discount to be added, provide their most recent report card listing their name to your agent.
